TO HEAL IN THE WAR. THE HEALTH CARE OF THE DAUGHTERS OF CHARITY OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL IN THE REVOLUTION OF 1859 AND THE PACIFIC WAR IN CHILE

Arrived in Chile in 1854, the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul were part of the Chilean healthcare system until the 20th century. These religious women were not strangers to the national reality of mid-19th century Chile. During various armed conflicts, they played a welfare role that went beyond hospital facilities, working in different war ambulances. Based on documentation from the congregation's archives, both national and French, along with the Annals of the Congregation of the Mission and the Daughters of Charity, this article analyses the role played by the Daughters during two armed conflicts in Chile: the Revolution of 1859 and the Pacific War.
