Resumen

The first Normal School for women in Chile, founded and directed in 1854 by the Society of the Sacred Heart, is presented as a suggestive case to understand the continuity of the contemplative monastic tradition in the new establishments of the religious of active life coming from France, in the middle of the XIX century. Although the “modern” congregations broke in many aspects with the trajectory of the colonial enclosure; from the point of view of therapeutic care and the teaching of hygiene, the study of the sources linked to this establishment reveals the survival of feminine practices and skills oriented towards a culture of prevention.
