Aron proposes an original reading of Florentino's work, in order to illuminate the European situation in the 1930s. Thus, he believes that Machiavelli's reading - and what he understands as Machiavellianism - can be especially useful for understanding the emergence of the totalitarian phenomenon, and fighting against it, an issue that leads him to discuss with Jacques Maritain.
