Resumen

After the drama of the Nazi regime, many German intellectuals made efforts to rethink the foundations of the political community. Nationalism was no longer an adequate response to unity, and much less a shield against authoritarian or totalitarian projects. Jürgen Habermas and Leo Strauss agree in proposing a qualified citizenship, which adheres to democratic supranational principles enshrined in the constitution. Today, the rise of new nationalism requires rediscovering the responses of both authors, which can be understood as republican proposals inspired by different intellectual traditions. In this article we address two concrete problems of the new nationalist populism: the subordination of democratic guarantees to national identity and the limitation of political society to the members of the nation.
