Resumen

Mental health in the university population in Chile has been scarcely studied.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of mental health problems in undergraduate students at a private university in Chile, and to explore associated factors in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
Methodology: Cross-sectional study, approved by the Ethics Committee of the Universidad de los Andes. Undergraduate students answered an online survey between AUG-SEP 2020. Mental health (DASS-21), suicidality (C-SSRS), insomnia (ISI), and various associated factors were assessed. Multivariate logistic analysis was performed.
Results: 5,037 students answered the survey. 70.4%, women, average age, 21 years. 37.1% presented depression; 38%, anxiety; 54.6%, stress; 32.6%, insomnia; and 20.5%, suicidal ideation (last month). The most important risk factor was benzodiazepine use, and the most relevant protective factors were: high family functionality and high sense of university belonging.
Conclusions: This is one of the first studies that have evaluated mental health in university students in the context of a pandemic in Chile, showing worrying levels of psychological problems.
