Resumen

Pedagogues such as Antonia Tarragó, Isabel Le Brun de Pinochet, María Espíndola de Muñoz and Amalia Espina de Álvarez were able to understand the signs of the times and promoted early on the strengthening of female education in the country, promoting - among other aspects - scientific knowledge in the teaching of girls and young women. However, in the context of the German reform of the education system (1883-1920), there were also European women teachers who stimulated the desire to broaden scientific knowledge. Maria Frank and Wilhelmina von Kalchberg were among some of them. The following article aims to put the writings of these educators in the dialogue, re-reading them to show that in the midst of the country’s transformation process in the political, economic, social and cultural spheres during the change from the 19th to the 20th century, Chilean and foreign women teachers rethought the role of women in the public sphere as producers and disseminators of scientific knowledge.
