Resumen
The article analyzes the various explanations proposed regarding the 8th-century document known as the "Donation of Constantine." Through a comprehensive review of contemporary literature, it aims to systematize the existing historiographical discussion, particularly focusing on two points concerning this document: the issue of its origin (Roman or Frankish) and the role it played in strengthening the power of the Papacy. It is concluded that while the Holy See did not extensively use the "Donation" in its political claims or discourse on primacy, as doubts about its authenticity always existed, the document had a strong implicit significance. It emphasized the universal nature of the Church (as the Roman Empire had been) and highlighted its role in preserving culture during the Middle Ages.
