N2 - There is no doubt that dialectic is one of the central subjects of Platonic thought, and yet those who attempt to explain it find this task to be quite difficult. A common approach in the scholarship is to simply point to a variety of procedures that differ from dialogue to dialogue depending on the context, the time of writing, and the object of inquiry. However, this type of answer does not satisfy those seeking a synoptic view of Platonic dialectic, even when one accepts that the dialogical format gives rise to a variety of renderings of one (in a sense) way of investigating reality.
