Don José Manuel Bermúdez (1742-1830): un caso paradigmático de clérigo, hagiógrafo e historiador, forjado entre el Virreinato y la República

The present article compiles from different sources the existing data about the life and work of the clergyman José Manuel Bermúdez. He is the author of several biographies, one of which is dedicated to the life and virtues of Catalina de Yturgoyen, who lived in the late 17^th and early 18^th centuries and died in Peru with a reputation of holiness. Through an analysis of Bermúdez’s works, which also include several funeral discourses and the Anales de la Catedral de Lima, the biography of one of the main representatives of Peruvian hagiographic literature from the late 18th to early 19th centuries comes to life. This biographical study is part of a broader work that seeks to reconstruct the historical, political, cultural, and religious context in which this model of sanctity, rescued by the author, is situated.
