Resumen

Introduction: The misuse of nootropics (eg, methylphenidate, modafinil, etc.), that is, without a prescription, among university students has been increasing, reaching a prevalence of between 5-35%.
Objective: To explore associations between the history of the diagnosis of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD) and other factors and the risk consumption of nootropics in undergraduate students from a private university.
Methodology: Cross-sectional study. The data were obtained from an online survey using the ASSIST instrument, where a score ≥4 was considered risky consumption. A multivariate logistic analysis of the exposed variables was carried out.
Results: Having a previous diagnosis of ADHD increases 8.6 times the chances of “Risk consumption of nootropics”. In addition, the risky consumption of other substances (tobacco and benzodiazepines) is also strongly associated with the risky consumption of nootropics.
Conclusions: There is a strong association between a previous ADHD diagnosis and risky consumption of nootropics.
