The Chanson de Guillaume is one of the oldest surviving chansons de geste. To grasp its position in the evolution of the epic, critics have focused on dissecting it. In contrast, we propose to look at the text as a whole, as a literary object and as an act of communication. We need to analyze it in its entirety, bearing in mind that its reception was totalizing, mixing history, aesthetic pleasure and celebration: it was received within what we'll call the “epic horizon”, which we'll use to integrate the contributions of research on memory, orality, emotions, normativity and history. The aim is to reveal the imaginary in which the song was received and which reinforced it. This approach makes it possible to account for the singularities of Guillaume and to discover the relationship between the Normands listeners and the values transmitted by the song.
