Abstract
Literature regarding smoking is reviewed, including its associations with somatic pathology and with mental heatlh and its trends. There is a global decreasing trend in smoking but this trend is not homogeneous in the diferent populations and some countries show even increase in their smoking rates. These differences and trends are discussed and some plausible explanations are given. These differences and implications are important to be considered especially in countries were a decreasing trend in smoking is not observed.
