Abstract
Chronic kidney failure (CKD) has become a global health problem, due to its great increase in the world, being one of the main causes of death. The global prevalence of CKD is estimated between 8-16%, varying between countries. Kidney disease causes multiple oral manifestations in both hard and soft tissues and systemic manifestations, being a challenge for the treater. The objective of this article was to establish the dental management of the patient with CKD through a narrative review. A literature search was performed in the PubMed and EBSCO databases, using a combination of keywords and the Boolean terms “oral surgery” AND “chronic renal failure” AND “dental management”, between 2014 and 2024, in English or Spanish. The dentist must identify the oral and systemic manifestations of patients with CKD. The management, early diagnosis of both oromaxillofacial and systemic pathologies is important, addressing them in a comprehensive manner. Before any procedure, it is necessary to know the progress of CKD, through laboratory tests and constant communication with the treating doctor. Understanding the main oral and systemic manifestations in patients with chronic kidney disease helps to provide efficient oral care and plan invasive and non-invasive procedures without complications.
