Abstract
The objective of this article is to show the genesis and construction of the academic trajectory of research professors affiliated with a private Mexican university belonging to the National System of Researchers (SNI). A qualitative approach was chosen, using life stories. The interview technique was used to collect information from 14 life stories. Five categories were identified that are common in the trajectories: genesis, consolidation, decision-making, influences, and perspectives. Among the most relevant findings were diversity in terms of genesis and construction, and other common aspects such as the importance of relationships with others and having an ecosystem conducive to research. The path of research is permeated with learning and requires certain attitudes. Life stories reflect the need for peer recognition in order to belong to the scientific community.
