Abstract

This paper describes a prototype expert system for designing and locating high-capacity bus-stops along a corridor. BUSTOPS uses a combination of algorithms and rules in trying to emulate a human expert's decisions on the most convenient location of bus-stops, with enough capacity to accommodate bus flows and passenger demand. The system provides appropriate general advice about the problem in the underlying context. Further studies and detailed designs can be conducted following this advice.
