Abstract

This article proposes, as an interpretative key to understand Machiavelli’s political philosophy, a synthesis between the primacy of fear identified by Leo Strauss, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, following Claude Lefort, the priority of political conflict caused by humors. Having discussed the difficulties and the scope of the attempt to articulate Strauss’ and Lefort’s interpretations of Machiavelli, and having shown how the primacy of fear allows to articulate the internal tensions of the theory of humors, the combination of both is applied to the paradigmatic speech of Istorie fiorentine III 13, on the ciompi revolt.
