Abstract

In order to understand Thomas Reid's critique of Adam Smith's Sympathy System it is necessary to determine the relation between this system and the moral phenomenon of sympathy in David Hume. From this perspective, the system can be seen as framed within the 'Theory of Ideas' -as Reid names it- which is developed according to a hypothetical-deductive methodology rather than a Newtonian inductive method, and therefore has no realistic or metaphysical scope.
