Abstract
The difficulty of understanding Latin American society is the application of categories that do not fully reflect the cultural ethos. From this idea, the article is focusing on the notion of counter-democracy. Taking Pierre Rosanvallon's ideas as a reference, the author exposes extensible theoretical considerations and how these are reflected in political relations in Latin America, with greater preponderance than the elements that sustain the idea of democracy. But it doesn't mean that these notions are contradictory. Therefore, using a correlational methodology, the article will give an account of the notions, differences, and reflections of these two forms of citizen participation, especially, in Latin American society.
