Abstract
Alonso González de Nájera is still a prominent figure in the history of Chile as the renowned
military man who wrote a notable early text of our viceregal letters: Desengaño y Reparo de la
Guerra del Reino de Chile. Dated in 1614, this diverse and heterogeneous work, a mixture
of a military treatise, mainly, but also an ethnographic study, and an account of facts, as
well as arbitration, manifests a stark vision of the Arauco’s war and proposes some specific
solutions to amend the direction of the Spanish frontier war in the hostile indigenous territory located south of the Biobío river. This paper attempts to reveal some features of the life history
of its little known author
