Additional Research Interests

In the last 10 years, I have focused my translational research interests in the pathophysiology and prediction of placental related diseases. This research has been in parallel with intense clinical work in perinatology. Following my postgraduate studies in England and with the support of the main Chilean funding agencies, I developed a Unit of Perinatal Medicine in my university with collaborative ties to several hospitals and Universities in Chile and abroad, and have gained experience, in clinical trials, patient recruitment, and translational research.

Our main goal is the identification of more accurate biomarkers for the prediction of women at risk, with the goal of developing efficient prevention strategies. As part of these research activities, I am directing a team that includes, clinicians and basic scientists, centred in translational research and with both national and international collaboration. I have also developed broad-based experience in biotechnology and am a co-founder of a private biotechnology company for development and deliver IVD MIAs for the prediction of pregnancy complications.

During this time, I have published more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications, have been the Vice Dean of Research of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Los Andes, Director of the Advisory Board for Medicine in the main Chilean Research Agency, and been recently elected as a director of the International Society of Prenatal Diagnosis. Currently, I am a Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the university of los Andes and Research Director of the department of O&G at Clínica Davila in Santiago.
