Rodrigo Astroza is the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and a Full Professor at the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Universidad de los Andes, Chile. He holds a Civil Engineering degree and a Master’s degree in Earthquake Engineering from the University of Chile, as well as a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of California, San Diego. Professor Astroza has authored 6 books, 23 book chapters, over 65 articles in Web of Science-indexed journals, and more than 140 papers presented at national and international conferences. He has led scientific and applied research projects for more than $2.5 million USD, focusing on structural health monitoring, structural engineering, and earthquake engineering. His numerous awards and recognitions include the Colegio de Ingenieros Award (2007), the Fulbright Scholarship (2010), a Fellowship from the National Science Foundation (2012), Best Paper Awards from Earthquake Spectra (2016), Engineering Structures (2023), and the IMAC Conference (2020), as well as the Dissertation Fellowship Award from the University of California, San Diego (2015). He serves on the Executive Committee of EVACES (International Association for Experimental Vibration Analysis of Civil Engineering Structures) since 2022, and he has delivered keynote lectures in Mexico, Colombia, and Guatemala. He has also been a visiting professor in several Latin American countries. Among his most notable awards are the Structural Engineer of the Year Award from the Association of Structural Engineers of Chile (AICE) and the Research Excellence Award from Universidad de los Andes (2024). In the same year, he was included in the top 2% of the most globally cited researchers. Professor Astroza is an active member of several professional associations in structural and earthquake engineering, and he has reviewed research proposals in Chile, Peru, Canada, and the Czech Republic, as well as manuscripts for over 40 indexed journals. Throughout his academic career, he has supervised more than 40 undergraduate theses, 17 master’s theses, and currently mentors eight Ph.D. students. His professional and research interests include structural health monitoring, structural dynamics and experimentation, earthquake engineering, seismic risk assessment, and the seismic response of structures and non-structural elements.
