Professional Information
A medical doctor specialized in General and Digestive Surgery, Dr. Ricardo Espinoza González holds a Master’s degree in Surgery from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (1984). He has maintained a continuous academic presence throughout his career, excelling as a professor, researcher, and institutional leader. Since 2005, he has been a full professor at the School of Medicine, Universidad de los Andes, where he also served as Dean (2004–2009) and Medical Director of Clínica Universidad de los Andes (2010–2016).
He has been a visiting professor at renowned institutions such as Johns Hopkins Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Universidad de Navarra. In 2000, he was named an International Guest Scholar by the American College of Surgeons. His career reflects a strong commitment to teaching, clinical excellence, and institutional development, always grounded in a humanistic and ethical view of medicine.
Research interests
His primary research focuses on hepato-biliary-pancreatic diseases and abdominal emergencies. Dr. Espinoza has an extensive clinical research background, with more than 120 scientific articles published in indexed journals and numerous book chapters.
In addition, he has explored issues related to surgical quality and has shown growing interest in the history of medicine and bioethics. These areas reflect his comprehensive approach to medical practice, blending scientific progress with deep ethical and humanistic reflection.
Teaching
As an educator, he teaches and coordinates clinical activities in the surgery area at Universidad de los Andes School of Medicine. His teaching method combines theory, practice, and experience, training undergraduate and postgraduate students in clinical skills, critical thinking, and medical ethics.
He is also editor of key reference texts such as Abdomen Agudo and the Manual de Urgencias y Complicaciones en Cirugía, widely used in medical education across Chile. Additionally, he actively contributes to scientific committees and professional associations, promoting continuous improvement in surgical education.
