Professional Information

Matías Petersen Cortés holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences and an M.Sc. in Finance from Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, a Master’s degree in Philosophy from Universidad de los Andes, and a Ph.D. in Political Economy from King’s College London.

Since 2010, he has been engaged in research and teaching at Universidad de los Andes, combining economic theory with political philosophy. Between 2022 and 2024, he served as Director of the SIGNOS Center, and in November 2023, he was appointed the first Dean of the newly created Faculty of Social Sciences, which began its activities in March 2024.

Research interests

His research lies at the intersection of political theory, political economy, and the philosophy of the social sciences, with a particular focus on rational choice theory, institutional design, and the thought of authors such as F. A. Hayek, Alasdair MacIntyre, and Elinor Ostrom. He currently leads the Fondecyt project “Whose work? Which meaning? MacIntyre on meaningful work and workplace democracy.”

Among his recent works are the book Political Economy, Institutions and Virtue: Alasdair MacIntyre’s Revolutionary Aristotelianism (2024), several articles on the work of Elinor Ostrom, and a study on the history of Marxist economic theory.

Teaching

He teaches courses in political economy and the philosophy of the social sciences at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
