Professional Information
Medical Doctor from the University of Chile (1973), specialized in Otolaryngology at the University of Minnesota (USA), where he also earned a PhD in Science and a Master’s degree in Otolaryngology. He is currently a Full Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at the Faculty of Medicine, Universidad de los Andes, and works as an Otology specialist at Clínica Universidad de los Andes, where he attends patients in both Spanish and English.
He is widely recognized for leading some of the first cochlear implant procedures in Chile and received the Academic Merit Award from Clínica Las Condes in 2011. Dr. Goycoolea has held leadership positions in national and international scientific societies, including serving as President of the Collegium Oto-Rhino-Laryngologicum Amicitiae Sacrum (CORLAS) from 2020 to 2023.
Research interests
Dr. Goycoolea’s research focuses on otology, including topics such as otitis media, hearing loss, deafness, cochlear implants, and central auditory processing disorders. He recently published a long-term study in Acta Oto-Laryngologica examining 20-year follow-up outcomes of cochlear implant patients.
His other notable contributions include clinical studies on the Osia™ system, an active bone-conduction hearing implant, as well as paleopathological analyses of middle ear diseases in pre-Columbian populations in Chile, focusing on historical cases of otitis media and mastoiditis.
Teaching
He is currently a Full Professor of Otolaryngology at the UANDES Faculty of Medicine, actively involved in specialist training through the Otolaryngology residency program, with a particular focus on Otology and surgery of the middle ear and cochlea.
His academic experience includes coordinating this postgraduate program and mentoring new specialists. Additionally, he is a member of the academic committee for the medical specialty and collaborates in continuing medical education courses linked to Clínica UANDES and the Faculty of Medicine.
