Professional Information
Dr. Marcela Garrido Valdebenito is a Medical Doctor graduated from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, with a specialization in Emergency Medicine from the same institution. She complemented her training with a Master of Science in Health Inequalities and Public Policy from the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Additionally, she has completed studies in Ultrasound for Medical Education at the University of California, Irvine, and holds a Diploma in University Teaching from Universidad de los Andes.
Currently, Dr. Garrido serves as a faculty member at the Universidad de los Andes School of Medicine, where she leads the Department of Emergency Medicine. Her career has focused on emergency care, the training of emergency medicine specialists, and innovation in teaching this medical discipline.
Research interests
Dr. Garrido’s research is centered on Emergency Medicine, with emphasis on areas such as resuscitation, clinical simulation, and emergency systems management. She has actively participated in emergency care training programs throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), aiming to strengthen regional emergency response systems. Her work seeks to improve healthcare delivery and contribute to the development of public health policies related to emergency medicine.
Teaching
In her academic role, Dr. Garrido teaches courses in Emergency Medicine, Health Management, and Public Health, and supervises undergraduate thesis projects at the Universidad de los Andes School of Medicine. Her teaching approach integrates theoretical knowledge with clinical practice, employing tools such as simulation-based learning to prepare students for real-life emergency scenarios. She also leads the Emergency Medicine Program, promoting a comprehensive education that fosters both technical and interpersonal skills in future emergency physicians.
