Research Interests
Maria P. Gomez-Arizaga is an educational psychologist and holds a Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Arizona. She is an associate professor at the College of Education, Universidad de los Andes, Chile and the Director of a Diploma in Gifted Education. She has earned two nationally funded grants to investigate in the topic of gifted education. Currently, Dr. Gomez-Arizaga is working as Principal Investigator in one grant about gifted women who display interests in STEM in their secondary years, to explore their decision-making processes regarding college degrees and their educational trajectories. Another project that she and her colleagues are developing involves the study and implementation of educational provisions for gifted students in the Chilean educational context. She has many publications, both in English and Spanish, in scholarly journals. Her research agenda is to expand the research in STEM, giftedness, and gender, focusing on traditionally underserved populations and their lived experiences and perceptions as learners.
She has worked closely with parent associations to advocate for the needs´ of gifted students at the school level and to develop a national policy for this population. She has presented in several national and international conferences and has participated as a reviewer and editor in different gifted education journals. She has worked in close collaboration with different researchers at the international level, developing proposals and conducting cross-national research.
