Professional Information
She is a Medical Doctor graduated from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (1986), with specializations in Pediatrics and Pediatric Endocrinology obtained at the University of Chile. She currently works as a full professor at the School of Medicine of Universidad de los Andes, where she also teaches in the Department of Pediatrics.
Clinically, she is a specialist in pediatric endocrinology and pediatric diabetology, providing care for patients under 18 years old at Clínica Universidad de los Andes. Her practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of hormonal disorders in children and adolescents, including diabetes, puberty, thyroid issues, and short stature.
Research interests
Her main research line focuses on renal complications in children and adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. She has led the project “Study of Renal Damage Biomarkers in Children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus,” conducted between 2012 and 2014, aimed at identifying early indicators of renal damage in this population.
Additionally, she has contributed to scientific literature with publications in specialized journals, addressing topics such as cellular signaling in fibroblasts from uremic children and mineral metabolism in patients undergoing chronic peritoneal dialysis.
Teaching
In her teaching role, Dr. Ugarte delivers courses in pediatrics and endocrinology at the School of Medicine of Universidad de los Andes. Her pedagogical approach is characterized by integrating theory with clinical practice, preparing students to face professional challenges in pediatric health care.
She also actively participates in specialist training through the university’s Medical Specialty program in Pediatrics, contributing to the education of future physicians in child health.
