Professional Information
Biochemist from the University of Chile, PhD in Biomedical Sciences at the University of the Andes. I have 18 years of professional experience in the area of immunology and biomedicine developed in the Program of Immunology, Faculty of Medicine, Univ. of Chile, then in Oncobiomed Ltda., and currently in the laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Immunology at the University of the Andes. Stem cells, especially Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC) have enormous potential for alleviating suffering for many diseases which currently have no effective therapy. The field has progressed to the clinic and it is important that this pathway is underpinned by excellent science and rigorous standards of clinical research. In these context the relevance of the phenotype conversion of MSC have a direct impact in the therapeutical effect of these cells for the treatment of the autoimmune diseases. We demonstrate that the long-term activation of TLR4 in MSCs induces a polarization to immunosuppressive MSC2 phenotype, with increased therapeutic potential to the treatment of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. On the other hand, MSCs with pro-inflammatory phenotype, MSC1, will be very useful to treat tumor cells due to their pro-inflammatory properties. It is important to be able to distinguish an MSC1 from an MSC2, especially when we will use in therapeutic cell protocols. We tried to find a molecular signature that facilitates the recognition of both phenotypes. On the other hand, the meta-analysis of gene expression data it is a powerful data digging tool for research in digital medicine that should be taken advantage. We should keep in mind that of the availability of numerous public databases that can be accessed to carry out preliminary studies that allow us propose with confidence new work hypotheses in the area of the biomedicine, hypothesis with a greater probability of being successful.
