Personal profile

Professional Information

Medical doctor, PhD in Medical Sciences (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile) and PhD in Philosophy (University of Navarra, Spain). He also holds a Master's degree in Philosophical Foundations (Universidad de los Andes). His academic path integrates medicine with a strong philosophical foundation rooted in the Thomistic tradition.

He completed a postdoctoral research stay at the Center for Medieval Philosophy at Georgetown University (USA), focusing on advanced medieval philosophical studies. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at Universidad de los Andes and serves as Director of the Center for Bioethics.

He has authored several articles and monographs, and actively contributes to academic research and university teaching, fostering a dialogue between science, philosophy, and theology.

Research interests

His research focuses on the philosophy of nature and metaphysics developed by Thomas Aquinas and other key thinkers within the Thomistic tradition, both in its scholastic form and in its modern and contemporary expressions.

He is particularly interested in the philosophical debates of the 13th and 14th centuries and how these discussions influenced the theological speculation of that era. This historical-philosophical approach allows him to revisit enduring questions about being, the mind, and reality from a classical perspective.

He is currently leading a state-funded project aimed at recovering the various dimensions of the concept of divine omnipotence found in the corpus thomisticum. He also maintains active research in medical ethics and the philosophy of medicine, especially regarding the ontological status of the human and animal mind.

Teaching

He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at both the Institute of Philosophy and the Faculty of Medicine at Universidad de los Andes, also collaborating with other academic units. His main subjects include philosophy of nature, philosophical anthropology, medical ethics, and philosophy of medicine.

His teaching aims to connect classical philosophical thought with contemporary challenges in medicine, training students to integrate ethical and philosophical foundations into their future professional practice.

He promotes an interdisciplinary approach in the classroom, encouraging dialogue between science, philosophy, and theology—with a special focus on themes such as consciousness, life, human dignity, and clinical decision-making.
