Dr. José Fernando Bartolomé Matas Naranjo is medical doctor graduated from the University of Chile in 1989, with specialties in Traumatology and Orthopedics certified by CONACEM. He has over three decades of experience in both clinical and academic settings. Currently, he serves as the Head of the Department of Traumatology and Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Universidad de los Andes, leading the Trauma and Orthopedics area with a particular focus on the knee and sports medicine.
Leads research focused on treating knee osteoarthritis through the intraarticular application of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells. He has participated in clinical studies comparing the efficacy of these stem cells with conventional treatments, demonstrating their potential to improve joint function and reduce pain in osteoarthritis patients.
Additionally, he has collaborated in research on the accuracy of computed tomography for measuring component rotation in knee prostheses, contributing to the development of more precise and less invasive surgical techniques. These studies reflect his commitment to the continuous improvement of orthopedic treatments and patient quality of life.
As a Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Universidad de los Andes, Dr. Matas Naranjo teaches courses in the area of Traumatology and Orthopedics, training future doctors and specialists in these disciplines. His pedagogical approach integrates theory with clinical practice, allowing students to develop technical skills and critical thinking necessary to address challenges in the healthcare field.
Additionally, his participation in faculty development programs reflects his commitment to the continuous improvement of university teaching. This commitment extends to his role as Head of the Department of Traumatology, where he leads initiatives to update and improve curricular content, ensuring that students receive cutting-edge training in orthopedic medicine.
