Professional Information
Javier Mella is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Universidad de los Andes, Chile. He earned his degree as an Industrial Engineer from Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, master's degrees in Finance and Global MBA from Universidad de Chile, and a Master of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance from the University of Rochester, New York. Additionally, Javier holds a PhD in Finance from McMaster University in Canada and is a CFA charterholder.
He has published articles in journals indexed in WoS and/or Scopus, including Global Finance Journal and Economics Letters, and has presented at five international conferences. He has also served as a reviewer for multiple WoS journals such as Financial Innovation, International Review of Financial Analysis, and Emerging Markets Finance & Trade, as well as for international conferences including the Financial Management Association (FMA), Eastern Finance Association (EFA), Southwestern Finance Association (SWFA), and Southern Finance Association (SFA). He is currently leading a Fondecyt Initiation research project.
Previously, he taught at McMaster University (Canada) and was an Assistant Professor, as well as the Albert and Sarah Brout Professor of Business at Christopher Newport University during the 2020-2021 academic year. He has also received recognitions such as CFA Virginia Society Forecast Competition Winner for Oil and 10-year Bond Yield in 2022, the ITecA Grant for Innovation in Teaching in 2022, the Albert and Sarah Brout Professor of Business Award in 2020, and the AFA Travel Grant Award in 2017.
Research interests
His research interests are in finance, mainly asset pricing, investments, and their relationship with political variables. Additionally, his work relates to different classes of financial assets such as stocks, bonds, and crypto assets.
Teaching
Throughout his academic career, he has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses, has supervised over 17 undergraduate theses, and is currently supervising one master's student.
