Isabela Múnevar is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Business and Economics, Universidad de los Andes (Chile). She holds a Ph.D. in Economics and Education from Columbia University and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University’s Center for International Development. Her research focuses on the determinants of learning and educational mobility, with a special emphasis on the design and evaluation of education policies in Latin America.
My research interests lie in the economics of education and development, with a focus on how institutions, incentives, and social environments shape educational outcomes for children and youth. I study the determinants of educational quality, equity in access, and the mechanisms that promote school attendance and learning, combining quasi-experimental methods, impact evaluations, and large-scale administrative data analysis.
My recent work examines topics such as the effects of school spending and management on student achievement, commuting barriers to school access, and the role of socio-emotional skills and mental health in academic performance. I also explore systemic approaches to education, analyzing how governments, schools, families, and communities interact in shaping effective and equitable education systems.
My teaching experience focuses on undergraduate economics, particularly in microeconomics, economics of education, and development. At Universidad de los Andes (Chile), I teach undergraduate courses in Development Economics and Microeconomics, aiming to connect economic theory with empirical evidence and policy challenges in Latin America.
Before joining Universidad de los Andes Chile, I served as a teaching assistant for undergraduate courses at Universidad de los Andes (Colombia) and Columbia University (USA), including Introduction to Economics, Intermediate Microeconomics, and Economics of Education. These experiences reinforced my commitment to active learning, analytical reasoning, and the application of economic principles to real-world issues.
