Personal profile

Professional Information

I am a dentist, graduated from the School of Dentistry at the “Universidad Mayor de San Marcos” (2007) Lima, Peru, with extensive academic and research experience in the field of dental materials. During my undergraduate studies, I served as a Teaching Assistant in courses such as "General and Dental Embryology" and "General and Dental Histology," which allowed me to strengthen my academic foundation.

My interests in dental materials led me to earn a CAPES scholarship to pursue a master’s (2014-2015) and a Ph.D. (2016-2020) in Dental Materials at the University of Campinas, Brazil. My research has focused on dental adhesion, the use of non-thermal atmospheric plasma (NTAP) as a disinfectant, and photodynamic therapy using a blue light source.

As a professor and researcher, I have worked at the Universidad Científica del Sur (2021-2023) and the Universidad Norbert Wiener (2021-2023), both in Lima, Peru, contributing to various research projects, including studies on the antimicrobial properties of natural product extracts applied to dental materials.

Currently, I am part of the doctoral faculty at the University of the Andes in Chile (2023-present), where I work as a professor and researcher. Throughout my academic career, I have published 21 research articles, presented my findings at international conferences, and actively participate as a member of thesis committees at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels.

Teaching

With over 10 years dedicated to teaching dentistry, I have been a university professor in undergraduate, specialty, master's, and doctoral programs.

My pedagogical approach focuses on the holistic development of students, combining methods that help them understand the principles of the concepts studied and apply them in challenging day-to-day situations. A notable example is from 2022, when I taught the elective course ""Research in Oral Health – ISO"" at Universidad Científica del Sur. Initially focused on literature review, I transformed it into a scientific writing workshop. Students improved drafts of already published articles, gaining valuable tools to assess publication quality and write more effectively and professionally. This provided them with much more advanced skills compared to those who did not take the course. In 2023, in the "Microbiology and Immunology II" course, I introduced a practical activity that gave students an applied perspective on the theoretical knowledge acquired. This allowed students to better understand the concepts being taught in a course that was entirely theoretical and made it more relevant.

Additionally, during these years, I have taught scientific research courses, particularly in scientific writing and statistics, dental materials, dental operations, and oral microbiology.

Research interests

My research is focused on the field of Dental Materials, particularly in developing alternative methods for oral surface disinfection, photopolymerization, 3D printing, and dental adhesion.

My work has led to publications in high-impact journals, demonstrating the relevance of these studies. I actively collaborate with research centers in Brazil, the United States, and Peru. One key contribution I highlight is the optimization of "Antimicrobial Phototherapy." In this area, we have achieved promising results using a blue light source (the same one used for resin composite polymerization), low doses of curcumin, and clinically acceptable times. This improvement effectively addresses a major limitation identified in previous studies.

I believe that these research efforts contribute significantly to the field of Dental Materials while offering innovative, practical solutions for clinical practice.
