My professional trajectory has primarily developed in the fields of microbiology and biomedical research, with a focus on the study of gastrointestinal pathogens and the microbiota. I began my career by pursuing undergraduate studies in biochemistry, where I gained a solid foundation in biological sciences. Subsequently, I completed a Ph.D. in molecular biosciences, with a focus on antibiotic resistance in gastrointestinal pathogens. During these years, I participated in various research projects, publishing articles in specialized journals and presenting at national and international conferences.
My work experience was consolidated at Andrés Bello University, where I have led and collaborated on projects related to bacterial resistance, the formation of persistent cells, and the interaction between bacteria and the host. Additionally, I have taught courses and workshops in clinical and molecular microbiology, contributing to the training of new professionals in the field. My career also includes participation in national and international research networks, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange. Finally, I participated in academic management positions and in doctoral faculty.
Over the years, I have developed skills in advanced molecular biology techniques, anaerobic microbiology, and data analysis. My commitment to science and innovation has driven me to continuously explore new research areas, aiming to better understand gastrointestinal infections and develop effective therapeutic strategies. My trajectory reflects a passion for research, teaching, and scientific collaboration.
My primary research interests focus on understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate colonization, persistence, and resistance of gastrointestinal pathogens, with a particular emphasis on Clostridioides difficile. This microorganism poses a significant clinical challenge due to its ability to cause recurrent infections and its resistance to antibiotic treatments, motivating the exploration of its adaptation and survival strategies within the host.
Additionally, I investigate the dynamics of the intestinal microbiota, specifically the mechanisms that allow commensal bacteria to colonize and maintain themselves within the human microbiome, understanding their role in gastrointestinal health and in preventing opportunistic infections. My work is supported by the development of research lines that explore resistance pathways, the formation of persister cells, and the biology of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in pathogenic and commensal bacteria. The use of advanced techniques in anaerobic microbiology and molecular biology has enabled me to expand knowledge in these areas.
Furthermore, my interests are directed towards identifying new therapeutic targets and antimicrobial strategies, including the study of target proteins, toxin-antitoxin systems, and the interactions between bacteria and the host. Interdisciplinary collaboration and technological innovation are fundamental pillars of my research approach to contribute to the understanding and control of gastrointestinal infections and to promote microbial health.
