Claudio Álvarez is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Universidad de los Andes, Chile. He holds a degree in Industrial Engineering and Master’s and PhD degrees in Engineering Sciences from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

His research has been published in leading academic journals, including Computers & Education, Computers in Human Behavior, Journal of Computing in Higher Education, Information Professional, and IEEE Access. He is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies and has served as General Co-Chair and Program Committee Chair at the CollabTech and MIS4TEL conferences.

Claudio Alvarez' main research interests are in the fields of technology enhanced learning, particularly, groupware applications for STEM and ethics teaching, and instructional design informed by learning analytics.

His research has been funded by internal and extra-mural grants (ANID/Fondecyt).

Throughout his academic career, he has taught undergraduate courses in computer science and software engineering, including Programming, Operating Systems and Networks, Human–Computer Interaction, Web Technologies, Mobile Application Development, and Fundamentals of Cybersecurity.

He directed the Diploma Program in Offensive Cybersecurity at Universidad de los Andes from 2019 to 2022. He has supervised more than 50 undergraduate thesis projects and three Master’s theses in Engineering Sciences.
