Professional Information
Doctor in Dental Surgery (DDS) and Doctor in Dental Sciences (Ph.D) from the University of Chile. During my doctoral period, I completed a 6-month international internship with Dr. Lesley Smyth at the University of East London, London, United Kingdom. In 2019 and 2021 I was awarded the Hatton Chile Prize by the International Association for Dental Research (IADR)-Chilean Division and, in 2022, the IADR Hatton Award in the Senior Basic Research category worldwide (Chengdu, China, 2022). In the same year, I received the Hermann Niemeyer Medal awarded by the Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Chile (SBBMCh), among other distinctions.
Currently, I work as a researcher in charge of a Fondecyt Postdoctoral Project and as an academic in the areas of Cariology and Biomedical Sciences at the Universidad de Los Andes.
I am an active member of the IADR-Chilean Division and the Chilean Association of Immunology (Asochin). I have made multiple scientific presentations at national and international level, including the annual meetings of IADR Chile and Asochin; IADR London, Washington, Bogota and New Orleans; LAMIG (Latin American Mucosal Immunology Group) Mexico City; ALACI (Latin American and Caribbean Association of Immunology) Varadero, and Buenos Aires; and the IUIS (International Union of Immunology Societies) in Cape Town, South Africa.
Finally, I have participated in science outreach activities such as the EXPLORA ANID program, Arte+Ciencia project, school science fairs, among others.
Research interests
Professor at the Universidad de Los Andes (UA) in the areas of Cariology and Biomedical Sciences (2024).
Invited professor to the courses of Oral and Maxillofacial Osteoimmunology in the Doctoral Program in Dental Sciences, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Chile (DP-FOUCH, 2022); Applied Molecular Technologies for Diagnosis, Department of Medical Technology, Faculty of Medicine UCH (2023); Immunology and Advanced Microbiology of the Stomatognathic System DP-FOUCH (2022); Fundamentals in Immunology and Advanced Immunology, Doctoral Program in Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, UA and Interdisciplinary Seminar, Doctoral Program in Dental Sciences, UA (2024).
Research interests
My research interests are encompassed in the fields of Biomedicine, Translational Medicine and related areas. Particularly, in general, oral and maxillofacial Immunology, Mucosal Immunology, responses associated with microorganism-host interactions, Mechanisms for Immunotherapies, host and bacterial-derived extracellular vesicles, Immunomodulatory strategies and, more recently, Neuroimmunology.
Additionally, although I have not worked directly in these areas, I have a deep interest in Cariology and Public Health.
Expertise related to UN Sustainable Development Goals
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
